Maybe you've always sensed your brain works differently without a single word that quite captures it. Maybe words swim on the page no matter how many times you read them or numbers slip out of order before you can pin them down. Maybe your body doesn't always do what you want it to, tripping over nothing or always seeming to knock things over. Or maybe it's sound, lights or texture that overwhelms you when it doesn't seem to bother those around you. Whatever shape it takes, dyslexic, dyspraxic, sensory processing differences, something else entirely or nothing you've ever had formally assessed, it's real - even without a tidy label for it.
Neurodivergent isn't a diagnosis, it's a broader term for brains that work differently to what society expects as 'normal' and things like ADHD, autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia all fit within it.
I've written separate pages on ADHD and autism specifically, this one covers neurodivergence more broadly, including masking, sensory experience, executive function and identity.
Masking and identity
-
Adjusting how you speak, move or react so consistently that you've lost track of what's actually 'you' underneath it
-
Exhaustion that comes specifically from performing 'normal', not just from daily life itself
-
A late diagnosis or self-recognition that's rewritten how you understand your whole life so far
Executive function and energy
-
A mismatch between how capable you know you are and how hard ordinary tasks can feel
-
Burnout that comes from everyday demands, not always extraordinary ones
-
Needing more recovery time after socialising or sensory input
Sensory and processing
-
Noise, light, texture or crowds that genuinely overwhelm rather than mildly annoy
-
Needing things explained precisely and finding ambiguity or unwritten rules genuinely difficult
-
A strong need for routine or predictability and real disruption when that's interrupted
Belonging and identity
-
Not being sure whether you're 'enough' of any label to justify seeking support
-
A sense of having spent years being the wrong shape for the spaces you were in
-
Grief for the years before you had language for any of this, alongside relief at finally having some
You don't need a diagnosis, an assessment or a label that fits perfectly to be here. Some people I work with have a formal diagnosis of ADHD, autism or something else, some self-identify without one and some are still working it out, none of that needs to be resolved before we begin.
I don't see neurodivergent traits as things to fix or manage away, they're how your brain works and the goal is to build a life around that, rather than measure you against a 'norm' that was never built with you in mind. That might mean looking at what masking has cost you over time or how past experiences of not being understood have shaped you today, not just finding strategies but understanding yourself more fully.
